Choosing well
How do I choose a clinical hypnotherapist?
A polished promise matters less than clear qualifications, ethical boundaries and a relationship that feels workable.
Questions worth asking
Trust can include information.
Look for clearly stated qualifications, experience relevant to your concern, transparent fees, respect for autonomy and honest referral boundaries.
- What clinical hypnotherapy training and experience do you have?
- How do you decide whether hypnotherapy is appropriate?
- Can I pause or stop during a session?
- What are the fees, duration and cancellation arrangements?
- When would you refer me to another practitioner?
Be cautious with guarantees, unusually high success rates, claims of permanent change or suggestions that you need only one session. A good fit should leave room for your questions and judgement.
How you feel with the person matters, too.
Alongside qualifications and experience, notice how it feels to be with the practitioner. Do you feel listened to, seen and respected? Is there room to ask questions, disagree or say that something doesn’t feel right?
It’s understandable to feel nervous at first, and trust can take time. You don’t have to feel completely at ease straight away, but you should feel that your pace and boundaries matter. You’re allowed to take your time deciding whether this is someone you want to work with.
