How can hypnosis help me to quit gambling?

When gambling becomes a problem it can make you feel as though you have no control over it. It can feel as though you are controlled by your gambling habit.

Central to this treatment is dealing with negative unconscious core beliefs that keep a person stuck in patterns of unhelpful thoughts, emotions and behaviour.

The key is that hypnosis allows you to change the way you think about yourself. When the belief changes, the gambling habit disappears.
How do I know if I have a gambling problem?
Problem gambling is typically characterised by:
- spending a large part of your leisure time gambling
- a growing need to gamble more and more often
- spending more and more money each time you gamble
- feeling that you can’t really control your gambling
- being secretive and trying to hide how much you gamble from others
- thinking about gambling when you are doing other things
- feeling guilty or ashamed about your gambling but still not being able to stop
There are a lot of different reasons that people gamble. It may be:
- To win money
- For excitement and entertainment
- To socialise with friends
- To escape from negative emotions and feelings
- To try to recoup losses
What seems to be a fairly innocent bit of fun with an occasional flutter can develop into a serious habit or even addiction over time.
It can begin as a simple pleasure, a form of entertainment. But the addictive power of gambling can often result in the feeling that you can’t stop. Or, gambling can be a reaction to distress or trauma from the past. A way of relieving pain. By losing yourself in gambling you don’t have to feel the distress.
I understand, and so therapy is very supportive and non-judgemental, and designed to suit the individual.
If the habit has simply developed through repetition it is relatively easy to shift. If the habit is linked to past trauma or distress, it is necessary to ease that pain and resolve the trauma before addressing the habitual behaviour. Either way, hypnotherapy is a very effective tool to use.
You may or may not be aware of what the triggers are. We can work together to find the cause and resolve the problem.
How is the Ready to Quit Program different to other quit gambling methods?
The Ready to Quit Gambling Program is a two-part process that focuses firstly on understanding the client’s own individual motivations, and secondly on addressing the multiple issues that have created the habit using skilled counselling and hypnotherapy.
Traditional Quit Gambling programs use counselling techniques alone. Further help may be given through support groups but these methods don’t get to the core of the problem.
Problem gamblers are so much more than just people addicted to gambling. Every individual has their own unique story and their own reasons for gambling.
The Ready to Quit Gambling Program will begin by working with the client to uncover both the original reasons for gambling, and the current drivers of the gambling problem. Then quit gambling hypnotherapy is applied targeting the full range of reasons that we have uncovered.
How does hypnosis work to stop gambling?
Hypnosis works because the brain responds differently to information when in the hypnotic state. The unhelpful emotional responses that drive the need to gamble can be gently changed and then the habitual behaviour can be removed.
There are essentially three parts to the Ready To Quit Gambling Program:
- Explore and understand the core issues behind the gambling problem
- Resolve the key issues so the need to gamble is removed
- Change the core beliefs about gambling and build a new set of beliefs so that you no longer think of yourself as a gambler
I use positive suggestions that encourage the unconscious mind to accept that you can quit gambling and begin to enjoy your life to the full.
If you really want to quit gambling, the brain will accept that information uncritically, and behavioural change follows easily. The key is that you must want to quit – you must be ready to quit.
These positive suggestions speak to your own personal reasons for quitting, such as wanting to save money or to feel better about yourself, and because you want to hear and accept this message, it is easy to change your behaviour.
So rather than feeling that you are controlled by gambling you will break free and regain control over your own life. You will move from feeling stuck to feeling liberated.
What is the Ready to Quit Process?
The Ready to Quit Gambling Program involves between 4 and 6 sessions.
The initial appointment is a getting to know you session.
In this 1.5 hour session we will explore your unique situation and discuss the best way forward to create a treatment that is just right for you.
This session will also include a short hypnosis session that will help you feel very calm and comfortable and alleviate any concerns you may have about hypnosis.
Sessions 2 – 3
If there are factors that may inhibit your recovery such as unresolved trauma, these are addressed at this stage, while gently removing the gambling habit.
I will carefully assess your individual situation in terms of any lifestyle factors that may impact upon your gambling behaviour and then shape the hypnosis to suit you.
Sessions 4 – 6
Then using the specific hypnotherapy protocols created to address the symptoms of Problem Gambling each of the following 1 hour sessions will focus on changing your gambling behaviour, while reinforcing the positive changes that have been achieved so far, so that you feel in control again.
Some people will only need 4 sessions, and some will need more.
